40MM BLACK DLC · AUTOMATIC CHRONOGRAPH · HAND-PAINTED DIAL
Even The Hands Are Black
Hands, markers and bezel numerals all go dark, so the painting is the one place on the watch where colour lives.
A chronograph is usually read by its silver: bright hands, polished markers, white numerals round the bezel. Put a busy painted dial behind all that and the silver fights the paint. Every hand becomes a flash cutting across the picture.
This watch goes the other way. The hour and minute hands are black, with a darker black stripe down the centre. The chronograph hand and the three counter hands are black too. The hour markers are black-centred batons in thin gunmetal frames.
So the hands read as silhouettes over the colour, the way a branch reads against a sunset. You tell the time by their outline, and the painting stays whole.

THE DIAL
Violet, Broken Open By Orange
Deep violet and indigo marbling, molten veins of orange, yellow and red, and pale lilac cloud towards the lower left.
The painting covers the face completely. The ground is deep violet running into indigo, and through it run veins of orange, yellow and red that look as if they are still moving. Towards seven, eight and nine o'clock the violet breaks up into pale lilac cloud.
Each of the three counters is a black ring with white numerals, framed in thin polished steel. Inside each ring the painting goes on, so the colour never stops at a counter's edge.
Around it all, the bezel is polished black with its tachymeter scale engraved and filled black, a small round dot beside each numeral. Most of the time it reads as a plain black mirror. Tilt your wrist and the numerals surface one by one, then sink back.
How The Colour Is Kept To The Dial
Painting the dial is half the work. The other half is making sure nothing else on the watch pulls the eye away from it.
Painted Edge To Edge
The dial is painted by hand over its whole face, darkest colour first: violet and indigo go down as the ground before anything bright comes near it.
The Veins Worked In
Orange, yellow and red are worked through the violet as veins, then the pale lilac cloud is added towards the lower left, one colour over the next.
Counters Over The Paint
Three black counter rings with white numerals and polished steel rims are set over the painting, placed so the colour still runs through their centres.
Hands And Markers In Black
The hands are finished black, the hour and minute hands with a darker stripe down the middle, and the markers are set in gunmetal frames with black centres.
The Bezel Filled Black
The tachymeter scale is engraved into the bezel, filled black, and the bezel polished to a mirror. Filled white, it would have been one more bright ring competing with the painting.

Why Nothing Gets In The Dial's Way
Painting a dial by hand is one job. Turning down every silver hand, white marker and white bezel numeral so the painting can stand alone is the harder one, and it is the part usually skipped. This one comes with its collector's box, the tool kit and a spare bracelet, for $799.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the hands black?
Why are the hands black?
So they never flash across the painting. Silver or white hands catch the light and cut the colour into pieces every time you move your wrist. Black hands read as clean shapes against the violet and orange, and you tell the time by their outline.
Is the time easy to read with black hands?
Is the time easy to read with black hands?
In daylight and indoor light, yes. The painting is bright across almost the whole face, so a black hand stands out against it clearly.
Is the dial really painted?
Is the dial really painted?
Yes, by hand, over the whole face: the deep violet ground, the orange, yellow and red veins through it, and the pale lilac cloud towards the lower left. The three counters are laid over the finished painting.
Why is the bezel black on black?
Why is the bezel black on black?
A white-filled scale would be a second bright ring fighting the dial. Engraved and filled black on a mirror-polished bezel, the tachymeter is still there to use, and it shows whenever light runs across it, but at a glance the bezel is simply a black frame round the painting.
Do the counters actually run?
Do the counters actually run?
Yes. The pusher above the crown starts and stops it and the one below resets it. The counters at three, six and nine are working dials, not decoration.
What comes with it?
What comes with it?
The full set as it leaves the factory: a collector's box, a watch tool kit and an extra bracelet, with the watch itself on its black steel bracelet.
Does it need a battery?
Does it need a battery?
No. It is automatic — it winds from the motion of your wrist. Left off for a couple of days it stops, and a minute back on the wrist restarts it.
How long does delivery take?
