Black carbon skeleton tourbillon watch with an orange strap on a dark walnut desk beside a fountain pen

BLACK THIN-PLY CARBON · ABOUT 8.5MM THICK · SKELETON TOURBILLON

About 8.5 mm, And It Slides Under A Cuff

An open dial and a tourbillon-style cage, in a case thinner than most everyday steel watches.

Skeleton watches with this much going on in the dial tend to be thick. Every wheel and bridge has to fit somewhere, and usually it ends up in the height of the case.

This one is about 8.5 mm from the crystal to the back. The tonneau is curved underneath to follow the wrist, so it sits down flat instead of perching on top, and a shirt cuff goes over it without snagging on an edge.

The weight helps as much as the height. The one-piece case is thin-ply carbon rather than steel, and the whole watch, strap included, comes to about 38 grams. It is easy to forget you are wearing it, right up until someone asks about it.

THE CASE

Black Carbon With Grey Grain Running Through It

The streaks are the layers of the carbon, laid open where the case was cut.

Turn the case in the light and the black is not flat. Grey-silver streaks run through it in long, wavering lines, closer to the grain of dark wood than to any printed pattern.

They are the layers. Thin-ply carbon is built from very fine sheets pressed and cured together, and when the case is machined out of the block, the cutter passes through them at an angle and lays their edges open. Where the surface curves, the lines bend with it.

No two blocks cut exactly alike, so the streaks on your case will fall a little differently from the ones in the photographs. The shape, the eight exposed screws and the two teardrop-shaped recesses at each end are the same on every one; the grain is yours.

How A Black Carbon Tonneau Comes Together

The grain is set by the layers, and the layers are set before the case is cut.

STAGE 01

Thin Sheets

Very fine sheets of carbon fibre are laid one on another until the stack is deep enough to hold a case.

STAGE 02

Pressed And Cured

The stack is pressed and cured under heat until the layers set into one solid block.

STAGE 03

Cut Through The Grain

The case is machined from the block in one piece. Wherever the cutter crosses the layers, the grey-silver streaks appear.

STAGE 04

The Open Dial

The skeleton movement goes in behind a thin polished frame: rose-gold wheel at the upper left, pink jewels, and the tourbillon-style cage at six.

STAGE 05

Orange Last

The ribbed orange crown and the woven orange strap go on at the end, and every watch is checked by hand before it is boxed.

2-Year Warranty. 30-Day Refund.

Why It Disappears Under A Cuff

An open dial and a tourbillon-style cage usually come in a thick, heavy case. This one keeps them to about 8.5 mm and about 38 grams, in black carbon with orange at the edges, for $899.

Frequently Asked Questions

check_box

How thin is it?

About 8.5 mm from the crystal to the back. The case is curved underneath, so it sits flat on the wrist and goes under a shirt cuff without catching.

check_box

Is the case painted black?

No. It is black thin-ply carbon, and the grey-silver streaks are the edges of its layers, laid open where the case was cut. They fall a little differently on every case, so yours will not match the photographs exactly.

check_box

Where is the orange?

In two places: the ribbed crown and the woven strap. The rest of the watch is black carbon, polished silver, rose gold and six bright pink jewels.

check_box

What is the cage at six o'clock?

It is the tourbillon-style cage the watch is named for — the style is known as a flying tourbillon. What you see is a large round cage inside a ring of fine silver teeth, crossed by an open rose-gold triangle with a pink jewel at its centre. Questions about the movement before you order? Message us and a person will answer.

check_box

Does it need a battery?

No. It is automatic and winds from the motion of your wrist. Left off for a couple of days it stops, and a minute back on the wrist restarts it.

check_box

How does the strap fasten?

One end passes through a matte black loop, and the strap folds back on itself and closes with a black hook-and-loop fastening. There are no holes and no pin buckle, so you can set it to exactly the fit you want.

check_box

How long does delivery take?

Ten to eighteen days to most countries, fifteen to twenty-five inside Iraq. Shipping is free, tracked and insured, and you get the tracking number as soon as it leaves us.

check_box

Can I ask questions before I order?

Yes, and we would rather you did. Message the page on Facebook or Instagram — a real person answers, usually within the hour.
